What is Coaching? How is it different from Therapy or Consulting?

A Therapist gets to the root of why a problem is occurring, how past life experiences shape current behaviors, and what feelings are created when a situation occurs. Therapy usually goes in depth about various issues, often dealing with the past. Consulting generally takes the consultant’s information and gives the client answers.

Coaching, on the other hand, is very results-oriented and action-oriented. The agenda of the coaching sessions is driven by the goals that the client wants to reach. Coaches enable clients to determine their own answers through the work done in the coaching partnership. A Coach knows things have happened in one’s life, and creates an action-plan to move forward. Basically, where Therapists ask ‘why’, a Coach asks ‘who’. Who do you envision yourself being when you think about overcoming these obstacles? Who are you committing to becoming?
